Herdade da Fonte Coberta estate was established in one of the most important wine regions in Portugal, where vineyards are currently the most valuable agricultural asset and the production of superior wines is an undisputed fact.

This project came about through hard work and entrepreneurship from the Santos family who, with a long wine-making tradition, decided to make use of their comprehensive knowledge to pursue a new challenge in a region of wine excellence. For this purpose, they acquired a farm in the Alentejo region, previously dedicated to sunflowers and grain production.

Starting from the first vineyard plantings, in 2003, large investments have been made in the vineyards (including complete and efficient drip irrigation equipment) as well as equipping a modern winery with advanced technology.

In 2007, Herdade da Fonte Coberta's first wine reached the market: Ouro do Monte, produced from the 2006 harvest. This estate, which is located about 5 km south of the city of Evora, has a total area of 190 hectares, of which approximately 150 ha is currently planted with vines. The vineyard coverage is divided among various plots, planted with a mix of varieties carefully selected to allow the production of high quality wines. The most representative red grape varieties within this estate are Trincadeira, Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet, but other types are also grown: Alfrocheiro, Castellan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Franca and Syrah. For white wine production, grapes from the Antao Vaz, Fernao Pires, Arinto, Chardonnay and Roupeiro varieties are employed.
The average annual production envisaged when in full production will be about 150.000 liters of white wine and 800.000 liters of red wine.

Being primarily dedicated to wine production, Herdade da Fonte Coberta also has important livestock activity, raising Limousin cattle for beef production.
